Culinary Gems

Campo Sasso is just minutes from a handful of great family-style restaurants, perfect for when you want something easy, tasty, and close by—you certainly won’t go hungry. But every now and then, your inner foodie might kick in, and that’s when it’s worth venturing a little farther for a truly memorable meal.

When we have time to unwind at Campo Sasso, we love hopping in the car for a leisurely drive to one of our favorite destination restaurants. There are plenty of solid options nearby, but these are the places that make the journey part of the experience—and are absolutely worth it.

Just be sure to reserve a table in advance. Some of these gems are small, often full, or sometimes unexpectedly closed. A quick call ahead can save you the disappointment.

This is our favorite pizza place in our area! And...you could run into Sting & Trudie since their villa Palagio is just up the hill!

The setting is amazing - only outdoor seating - and the menu is varied and all very high quality ingredients. This is a great place to relax in the evening and enjoy a warm summer evening with some nice tunes.

There is no indoors seating so open only in summer and when not raining.

Dario Cecchini is Italy’s most famous butcher—and dining at one of his restaurants is anything but ordinary.

Guests are seated at communal tables alongside strangers who quickly become dinner companions, thanks in no small part to the free-flowing wine!

Reservations are essential, and when you book, you’ll need to choose your menu in advance. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience that’s equal parts theatre, feast, and celebration.

A fairly new restaurant in Figline Val d'Arno (the nearest larger town), run by two young Tuscan friends. They offer an excellent tasting menu—alongside an à la carte option—at a very reasonable price. You can also opt for a wine pairing, which is always a fun way to discover new flavors and lesser-known labels.

Imagine an exquisite restaurant nestled in a small luxury retreat, offering stunning views of the Conca d'Oro and Panzano in Chianti. The atmosphere is as breathtaking as the surroundings, and the food is nothing short of a culinary masterpiece. The tasting menu, priced around 100 euros, is a true indulgence from beginning to end, leaving you wondering if you'll ever want to leave!

Eating Out in Italy: When Restaurants Are Open

In Italy, most restaurants serve two main meal periods:

  • Lunch: 12:30–2:30 PM

  • Dinner: 7:30–10:30 PM

If you’re hungry outside these hours, your best bet is to look for:

  • Tourist-area restaurants that stay open all day.

  • Bistrot-style spots (often called a bar in Italy) offering lighter fare, snacks, or coffee throughout the day.

There are, of course, exceptions—especially in smaller towns or during holidays—so think of this as a helpful rule of thumb rather than a guarantee.

Days off: Many restaurants close one day a week, often on Monday or Tuesday. For some restaurants, even Sundays can be a rest day.

Pro tip: Always book your table in advance. Opening hours can vary, and Google Maps is only about 75% reliable. Cancellations are fine—just give at least 24 hours’ notice so the restaurant has time to rebook your spot.

Pierre & I love good food and wine...the only thing missing is the time to go around and try places (and also, we're a bit picky), so on the map you'll find the ones we can 100% recommend (but of course there are plenty of other great places to eat around Tuscany).
